If you have a long driveway or avenue to your home, then lighting is essential not alone for decorative purposes but for safety reasons as well.
There are varieties of lights that suit driveways on the Irish market.
The most popular, and most effective, are the 2.5-metre pole and lantern type. These provide good visibility because of their height and suit a large detached house. Putting low-level lights of around 1-metre high will not suit a driveway of any great length whether it is a twisting or straight one. If the driveway or avenue is long, say in excess of 100 metres, then an alternate left/right combination every 10 metres will provide adequate light and not look too sparse.
Conversely, on a short avenue, the worst thing you can do is to erect too many lights. They will give off a crowded and cluttered look that takes away from the rest of the exterior house and garden lighting.
Avenue and driveway lighting should be functional and serve the primary purpose of providing safe lighting for the occupants and visitors.
Like all other areas of lighting in and outside the house, a proper ratio of area to light flood needs to be maintained.
