Dining Room Lighting

In many modern Irish homes, the kitchen is linked to, or part of, the dining room.

Older homes and larger detached new homes are still designed with a formal dining room separate from the kitchen. A casual dining area or breakfast bar will usually be part of the kitchen in such homes.

This leads to multiple choices and much head scratching in deciding lighting design that incorporates the areas but still manages to create a defined layout for each area.

The formal dining room will have a central chandelier type light set over the table. Depending on the style of the house, there are many variations and themes available on the market. A formal dining room does not necessarily mean a stiff and jaded look.

Far from it indeed. By formal, we mean a separate room that can have any ambience that the owners wish.

It will still need a central light, possible an extendable pull-down type that are fashionable and practical in recent years.

Other lighting in the room will generally come from wall lights, picture lights or from glass dining room cabinets fitted with lights. In truth, too many assorted lights in a formal dining room can deflect from the primary purpose of the room.

In a situation where you have a kitchen/dining area as one room, it is important to differentiate in the lighting of the two areas.

If there is recessed down lighters in the ceiling of the kitchen, for example, then it is a good idea to have a contrast in the dining section.

A central modern sleek light or cluster of lights will complement the chic kitchen lighting arrangement provided by down lighters and under-cabinet lighting.

Small occasional lamps may add that bit of intimacy to the dining area but it is easy to overdo this and create a baffling array of confusion and loss of the original theme that you set out achieve.
